February 2001

"'Passages of Faith' begins another 26-week series on a local Santa Barbara television station. For several year now, a local public broadcasting station has allowed the Santa Barbara saints to produce a Christ-honoring one-hour show, which uses a live call-in format each Thursday evening. The current theme is 'Signs of the Times', in which they will discuss Israel, the occult, persecution and evangelism in relation to the Lord's second coming. Saints from different Assemblies in southern California also appear as guests on the show for selected topics. Each week there is a clear gospel message as well as scriptural answers for life's questions. The show has been well received, and the feedback from viewers is very encouraging. Pray for this unusual outreach tool that God is blessing."

"Just forty miles from the Assembly in Cuernavaca an ancient volcano called Popocatepetl (commonly referred to as 'Popo') sits quietly smoldering in the distance, a curious smoking mountain. That is, until just recently, where there were two eruptions of fire and lava which prompted the evacuation of the residents from the village of Puebla at the base of the mountain. The volcano's recent increase in activity has frightened people all the way to Mexico City, and thousands of people were evacuated from the foot of the volcano to refugee centers located in Cuernavaca, which is just outside the forty mile danger zone. Scientists are assuring the public that even if there is a major eruption, it will probably not b a risk to those outside of this perimeter. Nevertheless, the saints in Cuernavaca are praying that these eruptions will serve as a wake-up call for many of the people in this area. They have asked us to pray for opportunities to present the hope of the gospel to those who may be willing to listen, perhaps for the first time.

"Indonesia was once again in the news with the following report of terrible violence. Hendra writes: 'It is very expedient to ask you once again for our nation. Last night, on Christmas Eve, when many believers were attending services, a series of bombs exploded in various cities in Indonesia...We thank God that the bombs in Bandung were found before they were used. The lord is truly our banner.'

"It is a very dark kind of evil that would lead people to bomb a Christian meeting full of innocent people. This is not television or some movie with special effects; these are our brethren, who in many places around the world are facing incredible dangers for simply being children of God. Pray for the safety of all the Christians in Indonesia, and pray that God will enable them to continue to love and reach out to their enemies."

November 1999

[In response to the Columbine High School killings and another at a Baptist church in Texas, the campus ministry at Cal State Fullerton launched an outreach around the question, "Is what you're living for worth dying for?"] "A huge banner asking this question hangs by the book table as students and campus Workers open-air preach and witness. Everywhere you go on the campus, posters outdoors and hanging in classrooms ask the same question. Thousands of personal invitations to the campus Bible study have been handed out. Each of them has this question on the front and the gospel with the testimony of Cassie Bernall from Columbine High School on the back....All this semester we have been asking this soul-searching questions to the students: "Is what you're living for worth dying for?" ....May God use this searching question to open and turn hearts to salvation."

September 1999

"In southern California the weather is often very nice in the evening throughout the month of September, and we are planning a new outreach for the week of the 20th-24th....From Monday through Thursday we are hoping to go to parks, malls, Starbuck and door-to-door with the gospel and an invitation to a concert in in the park the final evening, Friday night."
